The NIE (‘Número de Identificación de Extranjero’ or ‘Alien Identification Number’) is an essential Spanish tax identification number assigned to all foreigners by the Spanish authorities.
Having an NIE is a legal requirement for all resident and non-resident foreigners with financial, professional or social interests in Spain, and this law applies to both EU and non-EU citizens. The NIE consists of an ‘X’ or ‘Y’, followed by 7 or 8 digits, then another letter. The number appears on all documents issued in Spain, is non-transferable, and does not expire. Every NIE is unique to a person and is used as a method for tracking an individual’s financial and official activities in Spain.
