I hope that my knowledge of investment management and the UK regulatory framework will help to ensure that the monies entrusted to us are managed effectively and conservatively with the best interests of our plan holders always at the forefront of everything that we do.”

Amanda has over three decades of experience gained in financial services and corporate communications. Starting her career at UBS, she worked in several areas of the bank including eurobond syndication, international equity and the gilt edged desk. Amanda left the buy side and moved into a corporate advisory role at an investor relations company advising FTSE100, Mid Cap and Small Cap clients how to effectively manage their communications with their stakeholders. She then set up her own communications consultancy which she ran successfully for a decade before selling to a PR company.

In recent years, Amanda has worked in the public sector, initially at the Cabinet Office in a cross public sector/local authority stakeholder relations and communications role. And most recently, at the Bank Of England, in the financial stability and strategy directorate, before undertaking a secondment at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and then working in the international banking supervisory and regulatory division.

Barry Floyd – Managing Director of Golden Leaves Group commented…

“With the arrival of rigorous statutory regulation to the sector in the shape of the Financial Conduct Authority, Amanda’s incredible experience and depth of knowledge in the field of Investment strategy, Financial analysis and statutory financial regulation – will enable us to further strengthen the depth of expertise across our set of investment focussed Trustees. Would you get a 3D commemorative urn shaped like the head of the deceased?

An American company developed commemorative urns shaped like the heads of deceased loved ones by using 3D imaging techniques. Would you get one?
The company, called Cremation Solutions, is based in Vermont and specialises in memorial events and products.

Different urns
They make 28cm-high urns to hold the ashes of an adult, by combining a number of photos. There is also a smaller version, at 15cm high, which can hold some of the ashes.
They say on their website that as long as they are provided with good photos to use, they can make the urns look like anyone. The complexions can be adjusted and hair can be added before completion and clients get to approve the urns before receiving them.
The cost of the large urn is around €2,175 and the small one is about €500. Both come with a marble base and the ashes are put inside by removing a plug in the bottom. They can also make smaller poseable action figure urns.

Latest technology
They are all custom made using the latest technology, Cremation Solutions explain on their website, and mean that you will never have to worry that you may one day forget what your loved one looked like. You can also have blemishes and imperfections removed so that they will always look their best.
As funerals and memorial services are becoming more and more personalised, this could be a popular idea, and although it may seem quite novel, the Romans and Greeks had models of their faces and torsos made when they died, and although admittedly they didn’t contain their ashes, they were very popular for centuries.

Overdoing it?
The owner of the company, Jeff Staab, has been in the business for more than 20 years and wanted to offer a really personal touch for the urn. However, he admits that he and the developers of the technology capable of producing the urn, ‘That’s my Face’, may have gone too far and understand that people may find them creepy because they are just so realistic. Sales have not been what they hoped, but there has been worldwide attention and fascination with the urns. Those who have purchased them have been very pleased with the results. Staab thinks that it is the eyes and the colouring that may have taken them too far, and is considering making them in a bronze tone.

Personalising your funeral
The type of urn you want is just one of many things that you can personalise in your funeral plan to ensure that you get exactly what you want without the stress for your loved ones of having to try to guess what that might have been. You may not want to go as far as having a realistic 3D urn shaped like your head, but there are many things you can choose, from a casket or urn, to how and where you would like your ashes to go, what type of memorial you would like to celebrate your life and what flowers or headstone you would want.
Golden Leaves International offers you the opportunity to plan and pay ahead for your funeral, relieving your loved ones of this worry at such a difficult time.

Why do I need Travel Insurance?

Mr. Todd (name changed for identity purposes) popped into our Javea office after seeing our advert in the Euro Weekly News. He was planning a trip abroad to see family, he has pre-existing medical conditions, and feels that Travel Insurance is an unnecessary additional expense to the cost of a trip.

Emma, our Insurance Specialist discussed Mr. Todd’s concerns at great length. She was able to establish his personal circumstances, give him the best possible option, and explain how there are very real financial risks of travelling without the cover of insurance, especially having pre-existing medical conditions.

Emma provided a list of reasons why Travel Insurance is important:

  • You may need to cancel or shorten your
trip due to the illness or injury of yourself or
    a loved one.
  • You may need emergency medical treatment
whilst abroad, which may result in the need
    for medical repatriation
  • Accident causing injury or death would result
    in significant legal costs
  • Your outward or return journey could be
    seriously delayed
  • You may need to abandon your trip if you
were involved in an accident or emergency
    en-route to your departure point.
  • You may have an accident or sudden illness
    during your trip.

Mr. Todd felt Emma held his hand every step of the way, from his quotation, filling in the forms, making the payment, to making sure that he had all the policy information and contact details to hand, should something unexpected happen and he needs to make a claim.

Mr. Todd´s Testimonial

“It is very rare to meet someone as organized and calm as Emma. She helped guide me through the whole process and made it so easy, especially when she knew how against taking out a Travel Insurance policy I was.

She tackled everything with a level head and advised the best option for me. I wouldn´t hesitate to recommend Emma and Golden Leaves to anyone.”

If you have any enquiries or would like any assistance in this matter, please call Emma on 966 493 082, or email:

info@goldenleavesinternational.com and she will be able to talk you through the item and advise what is the best option for your circumstances.

Euroweekly News interview Golden Leaves

We recently had the opportunity to meet with Emma Quantrill – Golden Leaves International Operations Director.

Emma pointed out while the company is well known for Funeral Plans and the support, removing the burden of arranging a funeral for grieving loved ones at what can be a very difficult and upsetting time.

What you may not be aware of, is the company also offers additional Expat Services to all Expatriates living in Spain.

In addition to Funeral Plans, Golden Leaves also offer Health Insurance, General Insurances, Legal Services, NIE/Residencia Assistance, Wealth Management and Currency Exchange, which makes Golden Leaves International a one stop shop for all your expatriate needs, while offering a friendly, professional and knowledgeable service to their customers.

They will guide you through every step of the way from arranging quotes and appointments, answering any questions, making a claim, which we all know can be a very stressful situation.

Private Health Insurance

We spoke with Private Health Insurance Specialist Victoria, she explains how the Health Insurance policies that Golden Leaves offer are very comprehensive and good value for money.

They also offer a lot of benefits like, having no co-payments, use English speaking doctors at some of the top hospitals in Spain, do not have waiting lists, covers emergency travel care abroad and includes annual check-ups, dental cover, multi policy discounts, ambulance and emergency cover.

Victoria is always on hand and happy to help each client through every aspect of Private Health Insurance. For example, if you are applying for a Health Policy to assist in obtaining your Residencia, Victoria will book the appointment for you, fill in the forms and advise you on all the documentation required. She always goes the extra mile!

Victoria ‘s Client says: “I have been very pleased with the Private Health Insurance that Golden Leaves provided for me. Victoria talked me through everything and answered all my questions promptly. Since I have taken out the insurance, I have had continued help from Victoria if needed. No hesitation in recommending Health Insurance with Golden Leaves.”

General Insurance

General Insurance Specialist, Emma was also on hand to give us a little insight in to their General Insurances. Golden Leaves offer a wide range of General Insurance products such as Travel, Car, Home Marine and Business Insurance.

A few tips from Emma in her experience in General Insurance…

If you Plan to travel:

Not many people are aware once you are legal resident in Spain, then you do not have automatic free and unlimited access to the NHS, when you travel to the U.K.

You can get a Spanish EHIC, but this gives very limited cover compared to their Travel Insurance policy, which gives up to €10 million cover for medical. Up to €5,000 for travel cancellations and should the worst happen, all their policies include repatriation of the deceased and companion on the trip.

The Travel policies will cover up to 60 days on an annual multi trip policy and up to 180 days on a single trip policy.

Home cover

Whether it be your own residential home, a property you rent out short or long term or even if you are a tenant, Golden Leaves can offer a building and contents policy to insure your property, as well as coverage for high-value items outside the home.

They also offer a policy for Communities and Community Associations.

Emma added, “It is important to be open with your insurers, as there are factors that could affect the policy and indeed whether you will continue to be insured if you do not do this, e.g. you must let the insurers know if you are going to let your property out on a short or long term basis.”

Emma also noted that in December the policies allow an additional 10% cover to for any Christmas shopping, 25% free of charge on contents for valuables, bicycle and golf equipment are covered all risk in Spain only.

Car

Golden Leaves can provide competitive Car Insurance and they currently insure cars registered in Spain, UK, Gibraltar and Portugal. Emma highlighted that they will accept No Claims Bonuses (NCB) from previous policies, even if the bonus was not earned in Spain and how they can offer protection for your NCB. Other benefits of taking insurance with Golden Leaves is they also offer age discounts and there is an option to restrict named drivers, which could, potentially, lower your annual premium further and in turn, save you money!

Emma’s clients say: “From the first time I spoke with Emma, I felt I was talking to someone who actually cared about making sure I had the right product with the right cover at the right price. Emma had time to listen to me and I felt safe in taking out insurance with her. She worked hard to obtain the very best prices for me & beat my previous insurer (the one using a big red phone) by miles for better cover. So now all my insurance. For the house, cars & scooter is all in one place with Emma and Golden Leaves. I have one contact for claims, renewals and queries, that I have complete 100% confidence & trust in.”

Additionally, Golden Leaves have been awarded an internationally recognized business excellence accreditation.

This demonstrates Golden Leaves commitment to comply with strict regulations, while providing both the highest levels of service, compassion, support and security to its customers.

If you would like to find out more, please do contact Victoria, Emma & The Golden Leaves Team on 966 493 082 or alternatively email info@goldenleavesinternational.com and we will be happy to help.

Emma MacPherson staff interview

Glimpse had a chance to sit down with Emma Macpherson and find out more about her life in Spain, what it is like working for Golden Leaves and what it was like finding and organizing her General Insurance.

What made you decide to move to Spain? And, have you always lived in the same area?

Yes. I have lived in the same town of Gata in Alicante, and I wanted a better lifestyle for my children to grow up and live in. I feel I made the right choice in moving here and really enjoy the life which I have built here.

How long have you been living in Spain? And, what do you enjoy most about living here?

I have lived in Spain for 6 years. The culture here is amazing, and the town I live in, is very family orientated and everyone looks after each other. We are all one big community and it is such a nice feeling to feel accepted as one of the natives.

Did you come up against any obstacles while settling into your new life? Is there anything you would have done differently?

I have been extremely lucky to have met mum’s in the children’s new school, who helped me with a lot of things. Would I do anything differently? not at all, it is all part of the learning experience of coming to a new country and finding your way.

What made you decide to work for Golden Leaves International and how long have you been working for the company?

I got in touch with Golden Leaves as I heard they had a great reputation and were a good stable company to work for. I have been working here for over 2 years now, and I do not regret applying for a position as it is one of the best decisions I have made.

What is your job role within the company?

I am the General Insurance Specialist and deal with all Insurances from Home, Travel, Car and Marine. I deal with quotes, enquiries and claims.

What do you enjoy most about your job and working for Golden Leaves?

I enjoy working with our clients and making sure to give them the best possible premiums with the best cover available. I also really enjoy being part of a team, we all complement each other and work well as a unit. It makes coming to work every day enjoyable.

When you first moved to Spain, how did you know who to use for General Insurance? And, did you find it a struggle to find an English-speaking company?

When I bought my first car, I was unsure who to turn to as my new friends were all Spanish, I wanted a policy that was all in English, so I could understand it all. I ended up turning to Facebook groups for recommendations of the best company to contact.

What do you like to do in your free time away from the office?

In my free time I love having days out with my partner and children. We love being involved in the local fiestas and being part of the community. There is always so much going on that we need more hours in the day.

Car Insurance in Spain

Mr. & Mrs. Davies (name changed for identity purposes) came into the Javea office to speak with Emma for Car Insurance. They were in the process of relocating to Spain and were wanting to find out if it is possible to obtain insurance on a UK plated car in Spain.

After a near miss with their car upon their arrival in Spain, they realized how important it was to put the correct cover into place.

Mr. & Mrs. Davies were pleasantly surprised by the fact that not only could they have competitive cover for their UK plated car, but the fact their no- claims bonus is protected is another huge benefit.

Emma provided a list of further benefits;

  • Instant cover available
  • Increased excess discounts
  • Up to 70% no- claims discount
  • Receive up to €20,000 personal injury benefit for the policy-holder

Mr. & Mrs. Davies Testimonial

“We were relocating to Spain and the idea was to bring our UK plated car with us, but we hadn´t really considered finding insurance in Spain which would cover UK plated cars. We had a near miss (we weren´t to blame) and we were strongly advised to find a company who would insure UK plated cars as this scenario could have been much worse. Golden Leaves International were recommended to us by our neighbours and we were thrilled to have such great service from Emma. She really knows her stuff and made everything feel like a breeze. We are so happy to have guidance and support by Emma and her friendly team, that we will be taking our Home Insurance with them and we will be definitely using their other expat services too.”

Affiliate Development Program

Annette Bowen has been working hard on the business to business side for Golden Leaves and has also been involved in several charity events within the community, while spreading further awareness about the company along the way.

What is it like being heavily involved within the community and hosting events?  And, what do you enjoy most about it?

It’s a privilege to meet such inspirational people that give up their spare time and help others. Local events are a great way to bring communities closer together.  Whether it’s to raise funds for a worthy cause, bring about positive change in their area, celebrate something special or simply get to know your neighbours, a community event will help rally the masses.

How are you finding the response from the community, are they finding it informative and helpful to have you on hand?

The response has been very positive, the demographic here is that sadly many people have experienced the loss of a loved one, friend or neighbour and know what problems can occur, therefore they are keen to hear that Golden Leaves can help alleviate some of their concerns.

Your main role is working on business to business level with companies participating in the Affiliate Development Program, how are finding your relationships with them?

The affiliates are pleased to have one contact dedicated to their needs. They also see the value of having Funeral Plans as part of the portfolio.

What do you enjoy most about your job role?

I am very lucky to travel and meet many new people, I am enjoying the challenge of increasing the business by developing new areas.

What upcoming events should we look out for?

Golden Leaves will be sponsoring the MABs Hog Roast on September 21st, we have a Royal British Legion talk on September 13th in Torrevieja.  A wellness seminar to be held in Valencia in October and we are just waiting for the date to be confirmed. Plus, many other events are to be finalized both here in Spain and Portugal.

If you are interested in our involvement/sponsorship of your group or charity, please contact Annette on:

Golden Leaves lands internationally recognized business excellence accreditation

The Golden Leaves organisation is now the ONLY independent funeral planning company operating in the sector to hold such a quality standard.

In a sector that has taken significant steps over the last few years to improve and professionalize its operational activities and business practices, Golden Leaves has worked tirelessly to achieve a business excellence standard that once again highlights its standing in the sector as a quality and trusted brand with impeccable pedigree.

BSI ISO:9001 is not only recognised internationally as the world’s most widely adopted Quality Business Excellence Standard and Management System, but is also considered to be a powerful business improvement tool.

The Golden Leaves organisation is now the only independent funeral planning company operating in the sector to hold such a quality standard, adding this to their ever growing list of quality credentials clearly demonstrates the organisations desire to deliver business operational excellence as standard.

The business is not taking too much time to celebrate and has already embarked on its next British Standards Institute accreditation – the Consumer Service Kitemark.

Barry Floyd – Golden Leaves Managing Director commented:

“We are extremely proud of what the business has achieved over the past 18 months, this BSI standard being just one such accolade in a long list of outstanding achievements. With our founder, Tony Rowland, being awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen, the company winning a London based business award and being shortlisted as a national finalist in the prestigious Amazon/Santander growing business awards, launching a new ground-breaking suite of guaranteed funeral plan products and landing a renowned business quality standard – you can see that we have had busy and extremely successful year.

In addition, the fact that we are still experiencing continued and steady annual growth in terms of sales, when the entire market had delivered a 15% contraction in its figures, only underscores the extremely healthy position of the business. As we move into year three of our five year strategic transition plan, we are currently delivering on all of our milestone KPI’s. There are also a number of developments and important announcements in the pipeline for the coming months.”

Golden Leaves founder awarded an MBE

The founder of South London based funeral planning firm Golden Leaves, has been awarded an MBE in the latest Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

“Tony Rowland, founder of Golden Leaves Funeral Plans and Chairman of Rowland Brothers International (RBI), has been awarded an MBE for ‘services to undertaking and to the community’ after supporting bereaved families through grief for 65 years.”

Tony apprenticed at WA Truelove funeral directors at the age of 15 and then returned to the family company to bring new ideas and energy to Rowland Brothers. In 1971 he created a worldwide network and support structure for the efficient and compassionate repatriation of the deceased, who sadly pass whilst on holiday or working overseas, as well as citizens of other counties who died in the UK.

Part of Tony’s impressive work includes the development of the Rowland Brothers Foundation, which provides free bereavement counselling and practical help to all in his local community and the beloved Chairman and family man has also given back to the profession he loves. Tony served as the Chairman of the Southern District of the London Association of Funeral Directors and as the president of the London Association of Funeral Directors in 1996. He also served on the executive of the LAFD for 10 years in the 90’s. Tony is also a highly regarded member of the International Order of the Golden Rule – an organization of funeral directors selected for their very high levels of service.

The company has assisted in many emergencies, including the return of all the UK citizens who died in the South Asia tsunami, the 9/11 and 7/7 bombings and extreme weather emergencies. It is also an official supplier to the British Olympics and provides the repatriation helpline for the NAFD. Golden Leaves has grown to become one of the most respected and ethical funeral planning brands operating in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Barry Floyd, Managing Director of Golden Leaves said: “Tony is thoroughly deserving of his award through his initiatives to bring local communities together, whilst offering continued support for families in their time of need.”

“A real community champion, Tony embodies the compassion and commitment that the funeral service industry strives to maintain, and I am extremely proud to work alongside him.”

A Comfort in sad times

A message from Michel Euesden, owner of the Euro Weekly News

I do not offer endorsements lightly, but in the case of Golden Leaves International it was an easy decision to reach.

Sadly, 2018 saw loss of close friends and this really struck home to me what a tremendous difference it can make at a highly emotional and stressful time, if there are no worries about funeral arrangements.

For those people who have recently arrived in Spain – and many longer-term residents – a death in the family can leave them at a complete loss as to what to do. Who do you phone? What paperwork needs to be done? What is the first step to take?

As I dwelt on the added stress of these factors in a sad and difficult process, I began thinking about what alternatives were.

My thoughts went to the time when my husband Steven and I had the honour to be invited to the British Embassy by the ambassador to meet Prince Charles and Camilla.

There we not only met royalty, but also one of the most affable and likeable men you could wish to meet – Barry Floyd.

Like us, he had been invited as a result of his charitable work. When we started chatting, I discovered he was Managing Director of Golden Leaves. We immediately built up a mutual respect.

It was through him that I met Emma Quantrill, who had been running her own business in Mojacar (Almeria). She rapidly went from offering Golden Leaves’ services through her own business to being their Operations Director for Spain.

As my mind turned to funeral plans, I decided to try them first hand and so contacted Golden Leaves to investigate further. I could not have had a warmer welcome.

There was no pressure to buy – simply a straightforward, friendly chat with an explanation of the plans they have to offer. All the staff are an absolute credit to Golden Leaves.

I was impressed – so much so that both Steven and I invested in a plan. Now I know that when the inevitable happens, my loved ones will not have the added worries of arranging and paying for the funeral arrangements.

One call to Golden Leaves will be all that is needed – they will take care of the rest at any time of the night or day

Health Insurance in Spain

Mr & Mrs Proctor (let’s say for identity purposes) came into the Javea office to speak with Victoria for Health Insurance. They had taken early retirement and decided they wanted to relocate to Spain. Mr & Mrs Proctor did their research beforehand and thought that the EHIC (emergency medical card) would be enough.

After a near miss, they realized how important it was to put things into place. one of them being private health care. Victoria talked with Mr & Mrs Proctor regarding their personal circumstances, all pre-existing conditions and plans in the future.

The excellent policy was best for their situation and includes no co-payments, GP and specialist appointments, emergency surgery and any hospital visits, along with annual Wellman and Wellwoman checks. This is the top level for the cover we have on offer and is approximately €900 annually per person. However, as this was not required for residency, they opted to pay by monthly instalments on a direct debit at a slightly extra cost.

“We took early retirement and moved to Spain. We knew that we would need to arrange our health cover and after looking at many options, we went to Golden Leaves. Victoria was very helpful and knowledgeable and discussed the different options they had. After talking with Victoria, she set us up on a policy that met our needs perfectly.”

If you find you are in a similar situation, or have a holiday home here in Spain, Victoria will be able to talk you through your options and guide you as to what suits your personal requirements.

How I became a resident of Spain

Mr Smith (let’s say for identity purposes) popped into our Javea office after seeing our advert in the Euro Weekly News. He had concerns in becoming a permanent resident in Spain with all the chaos surrounding Brexit.

Victoria, our private Health and Residency specialist discussed Mr Smith´s situation at some length. She was able to establish his personal circumstances and give him the best possible option. What we advised for him follows:

To take out private health cover, which he had to pay 1 year up front to obtain his residency certificate, the best option for Mr Smith was the middle of our 3 policies – the Premium, costing approximately €800 annually. Victoria then went on to book Mr Smith his residency appointment in Benidorm at the Oficina de Extranjeros.

Victoria provided a list of documents required for residency at the Benidorm office. Please note these can change depending on the variables.

In general, these documents are:

  • Padron certificate (proof of address)
  • Bank Certificate (proof of income)
  • Private Health Care Certificate
  • NIE

Victoria also completed the application and payment forms on his behalf to present to the office during his meeting with them. We did give Mr Smith the option to take a translator to help with the appointment at a small charge. He decided not to take this option, as he felt that, in his case, it would be an easy task, having our help to prepare beforehand.

“I went to Golden Leaves to ask for help with my residencia application. Victoria sat with me and went through everything that is required for the application and answered all my questions clearly. Victoria gave me all the information I needed, as well as guiding me through the process and making the appointment for me. Victoria also went through the details of the Private Health Insurance that I needed for the residencia application. She gave me a detailed explanation of the covers and provided the right cover for my needs. I was very happy with the service from Victoria and, thanks to her, I was successful in gaining my residencia.”

If you have any enquiries, or would like any assistance in this matter, please call Victoria on 966 493 082, or email;
victoria.appleton@goldenleaves.com

and she will be able to talk you through the item as a whole and advise what is the best option for your circumstances.

Foreign Residents encouraged to register on the Padron in Spain

Local town halls have launched a campaign to persuade and remind residents to register the Padron.
But, what is the Padron and why do we need to register? The Padrón is a list of all the people who live in a certain town. Empadronarse is the act of registering yourself on this list with your local town hall and it is obligatory by Spanish law to register at the Town Hall where you habitually reside, yet many British ex-pats still have not done so. However, in reality, it is simply a way for the town hall to know how many people live in their area, without entering into investigations as to a person’s official residence status or financial affairs.

Once you’ve completed the simple process, you can begin to enjoy all the advantages being on the Padrón offers, such as: Better public services, Access to benefits and social care, a reduction in taxes, discounted travel, voting rights and overall, an easier life.

Looking for a stress free expatriation to Spain

Whether would-be expats like it or not, learning the local language is essential to making your lifestyle change successful and stress-free.

Moving overseas is a big challenge to the majority of would-be expats yearning for a new life in the sun. Tackling the basics and preparing yourself for inevitable changes is the way to make your transition as stress-free as is possible. If you’re heading for Spain, learning Spanish is far easier than tackling many other languages, and will help you integrate with locals as well as making bureaucratic tasks far easier.

Outside Spain‘s major tourism and expat hubs, English isn’t widely spoken, making the Spanish language essential for expats looking to live in a rural area. The best way forward is to take a course in the language before your move, backing it up and moving forward via the internet once you’ve arrived and settled in. Most expats admit the language wasn’t the challenge they’d expected, so there’s no excuse for giving up.

Moving overseas has one thing in common, wherever you have decided to settle, forms need to be filled in and paperwork needs to be exact and endlessly copied, with Spain no different from any other expat destination as regards bureaucracy. You’ll need an NIE number to do almost anything, including buying a vehicle and renting or buying your new home.
Admittedly, Spain’s red tape leaves a lot to be desired at times and you need copies of everything and extended waiting times for important decisions. Keeping everything in hard copy as well as online is recommended and, if you’re totally confused, the local paid intermediary should be able to put your mind at rest, especially when you’re forced to attend local offices rather than simply sending the required paperwork online.

If you are wanting to obtain an NIE number or apply for Residencia, please call Haylee on 966 493 082 for a chat and further advice or email info@goldenleavesinternational.com

Choosing the right investment for you

Choosing the right investment or pension can be one of the most important decisions a person can make during their lifetime. Getting it wrong can be disastrous and can have a long term impact on both the persons wealth and their health.

Unfortunately history tells us that if an investment sounds too good to be true it normally is, and this mixed with unscrupulous companies peddling investments that are doomed to fail leaves a lot of victims with nothing and no recourse.
Investment and pensions scams have continued to hit the headlines and this is true both in the UK and in Spain where companies see rich pickings, often taking advantage of retirees that have left the UK with funds available to invest. This may be as a result of selling their UK property in order to purchase a cheaper one here or through taking their pensions or selling investments that they didn’t feel were suitable for their new lives overseas.

It’s hard to know the good advisors from the bad, as many will splash the cash with big adverts in the newspapers or continuous adverts on local radio, promoting the next big opportunity. Then a very nice advisor will come to visit pulling out a flashy brochure with excellent past performance figures which easily beat the measly sum that the banks are presently paying.
But stop and think! What if this investment goes wrong? What if the advisor closes their offices or turns off their phone? Who and where do I go? Unfortunately many of those that have experienced this scenario soon realise that there is nowhere to go. There is no recourse, no compensation scheme, no ombudsman and no chance of seeing any of those hard earned funds again.
So how can you protect yourself from this scenario? The answer is fairly simple, check how the company that you are doing business with is regulated. With regulation comes protection and recourse should the very worse happen, the failure of the investment or company that provided the advice.

Our recommendation would be to use a UK FCA Regulated Advisor, one that appears on the FCA register, that reports directly to the FCA . If they do then they will not only have to ensure that their advice is within the strict rules that the FCA ensure they adhere to but also that they hold the correct level of Professional Indemnity Insurance and that they have the backing of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. It really is as simple as FCA. Ensure you ask the right questions before handing over your life savings.

Don’t make currency exchange a headache!

In today’s technology driven world, exchanging currencies has never been easier. Whether you are purchasing a property, transferring your pension or paying for an insurance policy in a foreign currency, the first move is to line up a regulated specialist currency exchange company.

Why use a regulated specialist currency exchange company? The first part is very important. UK regulation is thought of as one of the best in the world, and companies that come under that regulation have to use segregated accounts for client money so that those funds are ring-fenced and not touched but remain the ownership of the client.
A specialist currency exchange broker, as opposed to a company that is part of a bank, runs a risk free business. As soon as the client wants to buy or sell a currency the broker will interact with the wholesale market straight away. The idea that the broker plays with client money is false.

Currency companies are far more flexible than banks, in the fact that forward contracts, limit orders and a personal service are available. Also, the rates provided by currency companies are generally better than banks which means more currency in the destination bank account.

As we struggle over the Brexit hurdles, it is more important than ever that clients speak to people who understand the currency market and the options that are open to them.

To find out more about how much you could save on your next currency transaction or for a free no obligation consultation.

Should Brits become Spanish after Brexit?

Following Brexit, is there anything I can do to make sure I can remain in Spain?

This is one of the many questions on the lips of expatriates, after the vote to leave the European Union. So what can expats in Spain do to protect themselves?

The answer could be to become a Spanish national. Terms and conditions apply, but you could be eligible if you have a Spanish parent; have lived legally and continuously in Spain for at least 10 years, or are married to a Spaniard.

In other cases, British-born people have applied for Irish passports since the Brexit result. Already more than 3,700 Brits have applied to swap their British passports for an Irish one under ancestry rules.

Are you entitled to call the doctor if you fall ill?

Do you know what would happen to you if you fell ill or had an accident in Spain?

Are you paying for your health care, and do you know if you are entitled to health care as an expat in Spain? Do you have health cover if you return to the UK to visit family or if you go on holiday? Do you have health cover if you return to the UK to visit family or if you go on holiday?

If you don’t, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, many people are not covered and could face a hefty bill if they need treatment.

According to a health care report by insurance analyst Ian Youngman, there are more than 50 million expats and 232 million people who live in a different country to the one they were born in. However, one worrying statistic suggests that almost half of these people are not covered by international health insurance although they may have domestic health insurance.

Pensioners and some other people living in Spain, either permanently or as second-home owners, will be covered by the S1 form where the UK pays for your health care in Spain- but many of us are not entitled and need to find the best way to pay for health care.

Expat health insurance or international health insurance is designed for people who live and work abroad. You can take out a worldwide plan, or have a specific plan for Spain.

More people in Spain are enjoying a long retirement

The climate and healthy Mediterranean diet of Spain are just two of the reasons why more people are living to a ripe, old age. Statistics show 15,941 people living to celebrate their 100th birthday in Spain, including 508 people who are 100 years or older in the Alicante region alone.

These figures, produced by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE), also show that Spain is home to more than 8.6 million people over the age of 65, including 16,000 centenarians.

Recently, Javea mayor Jose Chulvi joined in the 100th birthday celebrations of resident Maria Codina Rodriguez and her family. However, it’s not just the Spanish who are living longer, as 1,000 centenarians in Spain are foreigners, including 135 British, and 88 Germans.

Undoubtedly, this is great news for expats who can plan for a long retirement. Needless to say, a town with an older population has different needs to a town populated with young families and children. Planners will need to address the baby boomers and the ‘grey pound’ when considering the housing needs of the region or the health care it provides.

This is a situation which should be addressed sooner rather than later, as an Alicante University report ‘Looking Forward to a Dynamic Old Age’ shows that 50 will be the average age of the population in less than 25 years. INE’s figures also show that nearly one in five people in Alicante province are aged over 65, namely 358,435 people out of a population of 1,842,963.

While we should raise a glass of red wine to a long, happy life in Spain, we should also address some of the issues it will raise, such as an increased need for healthcare.

Honouring your last requests

Although there are traditions and customs of how a funeral should be conducted, nowadays funerals are becoming more individualistic.

Perhaps due to changing views on the role of religion in everyday life, more people may not want a formal church service, and would prefer to make their last requests to suit their own personality.

According to the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD), people are making more unusual funeral requests, such as Morris dancing at a funeral, or a company director who wished to be buried in his garden overlooking the golf course.

Along with bizarre last requests, NAFD reported that people were finding it easier to talk about planning their funerals. Although it may still be a prickly subject to think about dying, planning your funeral can be a positive step.

You will find that funerals in Spain are conducted much sooner than in the UK, with funerals most often going ahead within a couple of days following a death. This doesn’t allow much time to make necessary arrangements- and pay for them. By planning ahead, not only can you personally ensure that your last requests are met, but you can remove the stress and financial pressure on those close to you at a time when they are grieving.

What should you be paying for prescriptions?

Prescription prices can come as a shock in Spain as there is no set fee like there is in the UK.

Back in England, you pay a standard charge of £8.40, although some items are free. Many people are also entitled to free prescriptions including over-60s; people with disabilities; pregnant women or who’ve had a baby within the past 12 months; under-16s; and 16-18s in full-time education.

However this is not the case in Spain. If your annual income is less than €18,000, workers pay 40% of the cost of the medication with no upper limit while state pensioners contribute 10% with a cap of €8 per month. If your income is between €18,000 to €100,000 and you are of working age then you contribute 50% with no cap and state pensioners contribute 10% with an upper limit of €18 per month. Both workers and pensioners pay 60% of the costs if their income is more than €100,000 with no cap if you’re of working age and €60 a month for pensioners.

Therefore, if you are paying more than you should, speak to your pharmacist or health centre to find out how to claim a refund. You may be wondering how the pharmacist knows how much to charge in the first place. The information comes from your annual resident tax declaration, which is another good reason to make sure this is filled in each year. Without this information, blanket charges of 40% for nonpensioners on low incomes and 10% for pensioners will be made but there will not be any cap to your monthly contribution.

Soon these financial details will be incorporated into your SIP health card. If you are not entitled to a SIP card in Spain or would like to top up your cover with private health insurance, please get in touch.

Spain seeks to reassure expats

Spain is keen to hold talks with the UK to discuss what happens after Britain leaves the EU. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is hopeful that a deal can be struck to defend the rights of British expats so we are not affected by political decisions.

His words are reassuring for the 1.3 million Britons living in Europe, according to United Nations figures. However there is still a lot to be thrashed out such as health care and pension rights for retired expats who, at present, receive state medical care in Spain.

These negotiations are expected to take place after the EU summit. In the meantime, Rajoy tried to put expats’ minds at rest by saying: “I hope that we will soon be able to tell them: Don’t worry, nothing is going to change for the Spaniards in the United Kingdom, nor for the Britons in Spain.” He has met Theresa May who agreed they want to come to an early agreement over reciprocal residency rights for their citizens.

As well as the Brits who have made Spain their home, the Prime Minister is keen for UK tourists to continue coming over. It’s big business for the Mediterranean country when you consider that last year about 17 million Brits flew in for a holiday. His views are shared by Spain’s foreign minister Alfonso Dastis who said they did not want to ‘punish’ the UK for leaving the EU. He said in an interview with the Financial Times that they do not see it as a battle where someone comes out on top and added that Spain is keen to keep a close relationship with the UK.

This could also be because Spain exports far more to the UK than vice versa, along with the huge boost to the economy by British tourists. Hopefully, therefore, our adopted homeland will be eager to reach an agreement meaning holidaymakers keep flocking to its beaches.

However, there is likely to be a stumbling block over the rock of Gibraltar as Spain has long sought to take control of it. The subject of the territory off southern Spain will be brought up during Brexit talks with Rajoy keen for all decisions affecting Gibraltar to be made jointly between the UK and Spain.

“I think that our proposal of shared sovereignty is quite reasonable,” Rajoy said, although neither Britain nor Gibraltar agree with him.

Golden Leaves International will be watching very closely on how Brexit unfolds and if you have any questions or would like advice on health cover please get in touch.
